...and not so pleased
Mar. 27th, 2008 03:14 pmTechnical stupidity is, well, stupid. I've been fighting for months with the VPN client that work provides for me, because I can't see the site I'm maintaining and be logged into the VPN. It has the (not-so-unique) feature of incorporating a Google Maps div. And I can't see it on the mac at home from the VPN. Part of the problem is that the Apple network drivers helpfully split packets between the VPN IP address and the home router VPN address. Which confuses Whee.
So the IT folks here gave me access to the new approach: Net Connect. No VPN client per se; you go to a web site, do some clicky magic (including typing in the SecurID asusual), and tell it to run everything on the computer as VPN. Well and good. Except not. Fails in much the same way (my page never loads, because it can never reach Maps). 4 or 5 months after I initially reported the problem, and 3 months after my last communication with them, I get an email that ends with, "sorry we didn’t figure this out sooner but at first no one ever thought to go poke some outside websites while hosted into Childrens. Figures."
Yeah, because no one would EVER need to do a web search, or check Wikipedia, or check their home mail while logged into the VPN. Nope, nope, nope.
